From darkhorizons, When it comes to “Star Wars,” the toys are an integral part of each release and the upcoming spin-off film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is no different. How they’ve been unveiled for this particular film however, now that is quite different.

The Star Wars YouTube Channel has just unveiled the first wave of toys for the film via a superfan-created stop-motion film. The film ties in with a competition in collaboration with creative network Tongal in which a team has been assembled to write, direct and produce original fan-made stop-motion shorts starring toys from the new line.

Beginning September 30th, fans are invited to create and share their own ‘Go Rogue’ videos. Teens and adults can submit their entries via the Star Wars site while a separate contest will be held for kids on Disney’s website.

Winners will fly to Lucasfilm in San Francisco to watch their winning shorts alongside “Rogue One” itself. Additional stop-motion shorts like the one above created by Tongal will roll out through the month of September as part of a four-part series.JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-64927610943627855582016-08-17T10:28:00.001-04:002016-08-17T10:28:56.668-04:00A FIRST LOOK AT HASBRO’S U-WING FROM ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY!

Fans will appreciate the collection’s nod to the movie, with vivid colors, creative designs, and, of course, John, Paul, Ringo, and George adorning the packaging. The collection features action figures, action dolls and other toys, apparel and more, inspired by the most popular DC Comics female Super Heroes, including Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Batgirl.

Inspired by the all-new franchise, "DC Super Hero Girls," from Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment, in partnership with Mattel, Target will offer a first-look at the “DC Super Hero Girls” merchandise collection, featuring a special assortment of merchandise across multiple categories, including toys and dress up, apparel and accessories, publishing and more, to be sold exclusively at Target, beginning in March. Master toy partner Mattel unveils its new DC Super Hero Girls collection, featuring the industry-firsts: the first-ever 6-inch action figure designed for girls; first 12-inch collection of action dolls featuring strong, athletic bodies that stand on their own in heroic poses; and first-ever action role-play toys for girls.

DC Super Hero Girls, which airs animated shorts at DCSuperHeroGirls.com, and will also be getting its own animated television special on Boomerang later this spring, centers on the Super Heros and Super-Villains of the DC Comics universe—Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Bumble Bee, Harley Quinn and more—during their formative high school years, prior to discovering their full super power potential.

“Target prides itself on keeping a pulse on pop culture, and we have a legacy of getting behind the hottest franchises to bring our guests exclusive merchandise,” says Scott Nygaard, SVP of merchandising, Target. “We are thrilled to be working with some of the industry’s leading partners to introduce a new generation to these inspirational characters, and know fans of all ages will embrace these beloved and iconic heroines as they build new memories.”JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-52266002063753061122016-02-12T12:43:00.001-05:002016-02-12T12:43:36.132-05:00Want: ThingMaker!NEW YORK — 3D printing was still decades away when Mattel debuted ThingMaker in the 1960s. As a primitive “at-home maker device,” it let kids produce bug-like Creepy Crawlers, mini-dragons, flowers and other small toys by pouring liquid plastic onto special molds, which were then heated up and cooled.

Now Mattel, in collaboration with Autodesk, is about to resurrect ThingMaker as a $299.99, family-friendly 21st Century 3D printer. Mattel made the announcement in advance of the Toy Fair trade show kicking off here this weekend.

I saw a full-size, non-working replica of the printer, which works with a 3D printing app for iOS and Android. If not for its bold orange casing, you might mistake it for a funky-looking microwave oven.

Surrounding the replica were many of the plastic things you could print, including toy fairies, dolls, dinosaurs, robots, skeletons and jewelry. Consumers can custom design such objects inside a ThingMaker app, which supplies templates and a palette of drag and drop parts that you can assemble together on screen before you tap the print button. Parts are printed in batches. For safety purposes, the printer door automatically locks when printing starts.

Mattel's new 3D printer is due out in the fall. (Photo: Mattel)

“All the physical behaviors are as it would be when it was actually printed out, so you can get an idea for how it is going to mechanically move and what the limits of all the joints and sockets that you create are,” says Dan Pressman, creative director at Autodesk. You pick the colors for the objects in the app as well; come print time, you run separate jobs to print each batch of colors.

The Thingmaker app lets you design the objects you'll print. (Photo: USA TODAY)

The app is actually live now and can be used to design items for other standard 3D printers as well. But Mattel’s own new 3D printer isn’t coming out until the fall, even though you can preorder it on Amazon starting Monday.

“We’re going to use these seven months to really learn and gain analytics of how people are using it,” says Aslan Appleman, a senior director at Mattel.

For all their potential, and their use for industrial, professional, and hobbyist purposes, 3D printers have been slow to catch on in the home. Such printers have generally been too pricey, too slow and too complicated, and the motives for owning one — how many people want to print out a case for their smartphone — have eluded most consumers.

Mattel comes at it as a toymaker, of course, but the company is viewing its upcoming 3D printer more as a consumer electronics product than a toy per se. In fact, the printer is designed for users ages 13 and up. (The small parts you print out are rated as safe toys for 3 years olds and up.) Beyond Amazon, Mattel hasn’t finalized its distribution strategy.

Mattel has been tracking the evolution of 3D printing for awhile now. Appleman says, “We think this is the perfect time for us to come out in the market with a product that’s disruptive in our opinion.”

USA TODAY

View-Master rides Google Cardboard into virtual reality

It remains to be seen of course if ThingMaker can conjure up the same nostalgic appeal of other brands that Mattel has tried to reimagine with newer tech. It was almost a year ago to the day that Mattel teamed up with Google to produce a Google Cardboard-based version of the ViewMaster stereoscopic viewer.

Mattel’s printer will rely on standard PLA (Polylactic Acid) filament just like other 3D printers do. Mattel hasn’t announced the precise branded colors it may make available or pricing for the filament, but the printer is likely to come with at least one spool, and you’ll be able to use standard filament sold by third parties. (You can find spools online today for around $23.)

“Our thought is we want to make this open to makers,” Appleman says. “What we want to highlight is the ThinkMaker ecosystem.”

How much you can print off a single spool will vary by the size and type of objects that you choose to print. Rough estimate: with an average 1 kilogram spool of filament, you can print up to 20 figures, more than 30 jewelry items or about 100 rings.

No word yet on if or when you’ll be able to print Barbie or Hot Wheels or other famous Mattel toys. “Obviously we have quite a few iconic brands in our portfolio as well as access to partner brands. You can imagine that’s part of our longer term strategy,” Appleman says

Printing itself will not be a quick process. A small ring may take 30 minutes to print. A large toy could take 6 to 8 hours.

“We think it’s pretty magical to watch these things being printed but after awhile you don’t want to sit there for hours,” Appleman says. “For bigger prints, click print before (you) go to bed and wake up to a brand new toy"JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-27647707003580115452015-09-21T07:29:00.002-04:002015-09-21T07:29:40.117-04:00Exclusive ReAction Alien Nostromo Crew Figure Set for NYCC

From therobotvoice, Alien is still the best ReAction figure license, because it’s the only one actually based on old Kenner molds. Furthering the tribute, this special set mimics some of the earliest Star Wars figure multipacks, and gives us a sign that New York Comic Con is really starting to pick up steam in the exclusive toy department. I believe this is the first-ever action figure of Lambert, played by Veronica Cartwright in the movie and made here without likeness rights because it doesn’t have to look like her on a sculpt this basic. You may not see another, unless Reaction gets the Witches of Eastwick license and decides that a figure of her vomiting cherries is a must-have.JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-20127175745103783282015-09-02T09:22:00.000-04:002015-09-02T09:22:23.751-04:00New 'Star Wars' toys to be unveiled on 'Force Friday' at Toys R Us, Walmart, more

From darkhorizons, The $4 billion that Disney spent on Lucasfilm is now beginning to look like a bargain.

With Disney and Lucasfilm set to unleash "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" related merchandise into stores around the world this weekend, a new report from Macquarie Securities analyst Tim Nolle to THR suggests that the new film could generate $5 billion in consumer merchandise sales in its first year of release:

"It's not clear how to model this as we can't name a similar such event. But looking at another successful Disney franchise, Cars 2 sold more than $2.8 billion worth of merchandise in its first year alone in 2011, and the original Cars movie sold approximately $10 billion worth of merchandise in its first five years of release.

Taking into account the strength of the Star Wars franchise, which has altogether sold over $20 billion worth of licensed goods in its lifetime, we estimate that Star Wars: The Force Awakens could perhaps bring in merchandise sales of $5 billion in the first year."

That also just takes into account the one movie, and not the subsequent sequels or spin-off films. The report also says they expect the film to gross around $2 billion at the global box office, netting nearly $1.2 billion in revenue for the company and putting it behind only "Avatar" and "Titanic".

In related news, photographs of some of this merchandising over at Jedi Temple Archiveshave revealed two more alien characters set to appear in the film - one seems to be a Jakku scavenger named Sarco Plank, the other a Resistance pilot named Asty.

Also, EA and Lucasfilm have debuted a trailer for the upcoming mobile title "Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes" which you can see below. The game will be made available for iOS and Android devices later this year.JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-62610757651232156682015-08-14T07:54:00.000-04:002015-08-14T07:54:08.790-04:00Pretty Much EVERY 3.75-Inch Star Wars: The Force Awakens Figure Has Been Revealed

From toplessrobot, Due to stores selling things early, the whole first wave of 3-3/4" figures has been purchased at various venues around the country. For the benefit of those who still want to try to go in to stores on Sept. 4th absolutely cold, I'm going to keep major details below - I figure showing a Kylo Ren face is safe because obviously a Kylo Ren figure was coming. With the sheer amount of reveals and photos out there, though, I'll be amazed if Hasbro still tries to keep it all a secret and doesn't release better official pics.

The bad news for collectors is that these figures only have five points of articulation - it looks like Hasbro has made the clear choice that only figures aimed at collectors get the full range of poseability. I wouldn't discount the chance that you'll see some of these new characters get 3-3/4" "Black" treatment later down the line, but how many will hold out for that?

The good news for those who want to avoid spoilers is that only two of the figures are characters I haven't seen before, and neither is one of the major players we have yet to see (no Andy Serkis or Max von Sydow yet, in other words). Some are original trilogy icons, who look like repacks, albeit with a gimmick.

The gimmick with these figures is that they come with oversized weapons that can combine to make small robots - a separate series of boxed 3-3/4 figures come with a large torso "armor" piece that functions as a mini-costume change.

And yeah, Captain Phasma is silver paint, not chrome. I'm just hoping the 6" line are more in line with what I like.

Will you be picking any of these up come Sept. 4th?JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-14995467003161567032015-05-04T07:36:00.002-04:002015-05-04T07:36:56.141-04:00That Old Evel Knievel Wind-up Motorcycle Toy Is Coming Back

From toplessrobot, Every kid I knew had this growing up, and I cannot recall one ever actually working properly - he'd go sideways and fall off almost immediately. Not unlike his real-life canyon jump, it carried the expectation of coolness without much execution.

With Forever Fun remaking it from the original parts, with necessary tweaks for today's safety standards, can they tweak it to actually do what it oughta while they're at it? Once again, what looks cool may not deliver - but at $50, it's cheaper than some nostalgia toys.JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-38354792515008689102015-03-04T13:49:00.001-05:002015-03-04T13:49:22.722-05:00Custom made Atari action figures

From chicagotoycollector, A lot of classic Atari titles received very little merch (or none at all), which is why some of these games have endured as classics, in my opinion. If Atari had been shoving merchandise down our throats for every franchise, maybe we all would've grown sick of these games.

Either way, if Atari had decided in the 80's to cash in on their popular games, this is exactly what their toys would’ve looked like (in my opinion). While the last batch of Atari figures I made were constructed from vintage GI Joes, these were made from vintage Kenner Star Wars toys, giving them a classic 80’s look.

And rather than make them only for myself, I made a few extra Missile Command figures and a few extra Berzerk figures to sell. They're all on eBay now for $50 each.

Click here to buy a Missile Command figure.
Click here to buy a Berzerk figure.
Click here to see a video of an idiot falling off a ladder.JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-22998367831029515002015-03-04T09:50:00.002-05:002015-03-04T10:06:10.408-05:00Funko Reaction figures get some competition from Big Bang Pow!

No sooner was I singing the praises of Funko Reaction figures (see below) when I stumbled upon Big Bang Pow! and their upcoming Flash Gordon line! Could this be the beginning of a 3"2/4 action figure revolution?! Although Flash Gordon has been done before I am encouraged that others see jumping on the 3"3/4 action figure line. I've been really bored with the action figure scene for a few years now. Star Wars figures have devolved into over-priced crap with characters based on the animated shows (yawn) and no-one else has been releasing anything interesting...until Funko Reaction figures!!! Funko figured out what made the original Star Wars figures so much fun. Rather than the over-articulated, cheaply made action figures of today Funko went back to basics and have released a ton of product in a short period of time. What makes these figures special, aside from their compatibility with Star Wars figures is that the figures are sturdy, simplistic, colorful, and they come in my favorite scale 3"3/4! For the first time ever I can have Spock meet C3PO, etc. I have purchased numerous Reaction figures over the past few months including the Alien, Horror Movies, and Monster sets and I have been delighted with the quality. I can't wait for future releases!JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-45412250879639169942015-03-04T09:33:00.002-05:002015-03-04T09:33:14.123-05:00Hilarious custom Jaws "action figure" on Ebay

From slashfilm, Toys are a necessary part of blockbuster filmmaking, but they’re also the bane of its existence. On seemingly every single major Hollywood film, it’s the toys that reveal our first look at something major. For Jurassic World it was the D-Rex; for Transformers 4 it was Grimlock; the list goes on and on. It took longer than usual but the same thing has begun to happen for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. An image has appeared online that shows Finn, Rey, BB-8, Chewbacca and a mystery character that may or may not be Kylo Ren. However, an additional piece of concept art was released that almost certainly is Ren. Find out more about The Force Awakens toy leak below. A Chinese Star Wars site (via Making Star Wars) posted the image.

Basically, you’ve got Finn dressed in a vest a la Han Solo; Rey dressed in sort of a cloak/robe, like a mix of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia costumes; Chewbacca and BB-8 looking as you’d expect; and then a mystery character with an almost “Stormtrooper meets Darth Vader” helmet, a cloak and then indented fabric robe. There’s no guarantee that this is Kylo Ren, but it could hypothetically be the character we’ve seen in the trailer. The Stormtrooper helmet also could suggest Phasma, the rumored name of Gwendoline Christie’s character. So who is it? Well, Indie Revolver is at it again, posting a concept image of a very similar looking Stormtrooper meets Darth Vader helmet, with yellow marks around the eyes, making for a very menacing look. Like an evil bumble bee. They claim this is Kylo Ren. Again, we aren’t going to post it here, but check it out on their site.

Pretty cool stuff if you’re a Star Wars fan. On the other hand, it’s a little disconcerting that we’re just under year away and the toys are already starting to leak. At least, in this case, it’s characters we’ve already seen – just in different outfits. Next, it could be a major spoiler.

What do you think of the image?JPXhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03213973405902714780noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19435432.post-38871490987374208282014-07-08T10:21:00.003-04:002014-07-08T10:21:40.173-04:00Want: Egg Chamber Action Playset

Last August I did a decent job of letting my nieces and nephews play with the toys I'd snagged from my storage pace. I had everything accounted for until the last day, when my Luke Skywalker X-Wing pilot vanished. My suspicion that Luke wandered off gripped in some tiny fist was confirmed when we arrived home and I found my sister Casey's old iPhone in my kid's Lightning McQueen suitcase. One of her boys had wandered in to my room, spotted Luke, and made a trade.

Shortly afterwards we received the photo above...

I repsonded with the following. Han and Chewie arrive too late; the phone is being carried off by Jawas.

Leia arrives, fixing the situation. Han jumps like Shaggy into Chewbacca's arms.

The getaway.

Both items were returned unharmed.

I love LEGO of course but this made me laugh: a motorcycle fireman with a single extinguisher would ONLY be useful to put out fires in trash cans, which this set hilariously includes.Octopunkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14948127593611773731noreply@blogger.com2
