More Vintage fun
Here we have our very first glimpse of the mysterious Boba Fett (unless you were up late enough to watch the infamous Holiday Special). What's so funny about this promotion is that it's obvious from the little picture of Boba's head that the toy designers did not have a photo of the character to work from. Boba just looks weird in that ad. Of course, this little photo sent all of us into hyperventilation mode back in 1978. Next we have a picture of the first carded Boba Fett. Gone is the promised rocket-firing feature, a MAJOR disappointment. However, the figure itself rocks and the blister card art is charming. Back in the day we couldn't wait to see Boba use his flame thrower (who knew we'd have to wait until 2002 to actually see it in action?).

Also, I've always found that blister card art of Walrus Man to be really creepy for some reason. Why didn't they have a photo to work from. By the time this figure came out Star Wars had been in the theaters for a while.
Walrus Man was, for me, the most disappointing Cantina fig. Mostly because one of the pupils on mine was cockeyed, but his weird one-piece outfit is pretty lame compared to the orange jacket he's meant to have. The new one, Ponda Baba, is among my favorite of the new figs. I may even have two.
I sent away for Boba Fett, I'm pretty sure, and there's nothing, NOTHING like getting that small white box in the mail. The liquid essence of childhood, moments like that.
I'm with you on receiving those "small white boxes"! There were a lot of mail-aways back then. I'll post a list. When that Ben Kenobi Frito Mail Away came out in 1997, I sent away for like 4 of them because it was really easy to do so (also, when I received the first one I didn't realize it was solid and I actually broke Ben's arm off trying to move it). My best mail moment ever had to be when all 5 of my cantina band members arived all at once. My mailbox was full of white box gold! I think the last mail-away promotion I ever received was that AWESOME Luke binoculars slide thing-a-ma-giggy from a few years back, what an awesome promotion! Okay, I need to calm down.
No, that binocular thing rules the fucking planet! Because it's actually a perfectly good slide viewer! I remember one time Voltaire needed to look at some slides he had and I brought in the Hoth binocs and he was uber jealous.
And I was going to comment on the ridiculous thrill of the five white bandmember boxes. I still have mine; they're holding small categories of action fig accessories.
"the ridiculous thrill of the five white bandmember boxes."What's so funny is that it's really just 5 of the same figure. Evenknowing that it still thrilled me when they arrived. Damn, I miss sending away for stuff. I even sent away for a poster that pictured all the Star Wars figures (up until a certain point obviously).
boba plushie, I think this is an informative post and it is very useful and knowledgeable. therefore, I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article.
